moshari is the lens through which sarwat rumi and imi rashid explore their 3 week journey back home to Bangladesh in December 2006 / January 2007. The Bengali word literally means “mosquito net,” and represents the shifting borders of safety, privacy, and authenticity that these women navigated in a staunchly patriarchal, heterosexist, gender rigid climate. The collaborative piece, with nikhil trivedi on sitar, weaves poetry, memoir, song and music into the surreal joys and bizarre challenges of being Muslim, deshi, queer, and deeply engaged in family during Muslim holidays and violent protests sparked by the upcoming elections of a fairly young nation.
